THE "NOT SO BIG" JOB AND THE "NOT SO BIG" PERKS

Although many of you say you want the "not so big job", you are now complaining that you don't get the respect, benefits, help, office space, etc. that you deserve as an experienced, senior person.  Sorry, but you can't have it both ways - a job that allows you to manage your personal time better and a challenging job!  My advice is to accept the fact that the workplace has changed, and to be successful, you need to consider some behaviors that now are very productive in most organizations.

First, concentrate on the project task.  Most project teams benefit from win/win strategies that value contributing ideas, working together to solve problems and being open to others' ideas and solutions.  Cooperation and collegiality are hallmark characteristics.

Next, let go of old status symbols like office space, etc.  Go with the flow based on your specific organization's structure.

Finally, enjoy being self-sufficient - you actually will start to thrive on your own contributions and creations.  Enjoy the fact that you are experienced and highly skilled - use those skills to help your team thrive and produce.

Change is good and remember you now have time for all those things you like to do outside of work...enjoy!

"Co-operation & collegiality necessary !"
Greetings, I have been a CANSI member for eight years, and have had some success as the owner-instructor of Ski For Life (www.skiforlife.net ) whereby we have carted around our van full of skis boots and poles to schools, conservation areas, parks, B&B's and some northern Inns to teach beginners or novices in full or half day sessions. While my wife & I fully enjoy what we are doing, and are satisfied with the modest financial return, we are both in our early 60's and see ourselves easing out of the labour intensive demands, such as lugging boxes of boots around, in the next couple of years. We would like to gradually turn things over to another couple or individual who would carry on the grass roots instruction concept to introduce or refine the skills of the recreational skier. So, my hope in the next year or two is to pass the Ski For Life torch to some younger or even potential instructor who might want to continue the work of Ski For Life, perhaps working with us for a year or two, then gradually taking over . Email mahony@execulink.com or phone 519-842-4652. Thanks, Dan Mahony
