After talking with many over 40 folks who have decided to do volunteer work, we all agree that sometimes there are some surprising benefits that are unanticipated. Now, we all agree that there are many traditional benefits to both the nonprofit organizations and the individuals in this process. But, for many over 40 folks, especially boomers, there are some unexpected "highs".
Most of us didn't expect the "high" of just reawakening how much we like using some of our talents, skills and experience in a new organizational setting. So, some of you are saying, "so what". Well, the surprising part is that for many of us, this means a change in our "real" work. Some of you have told me that you now are in a career change after experiencing working in a new environment and doing some interesting work. This was not expected, but it is such life-changing experience.
So, why not try it a volunteer experience...but make sure you are going to do something meaningful. Let me hear if you have had a similar experience...or a not so good experience.
Have a great day!
